Breon O'Casey
Printmaker, Painter, Sculptor & Jeweller

Breon O’Casey is respected and admired as a painter, sculptor, jeweller and weaver and more recently as a printmaker; working closely with the late master printmaker Hugh Stoneman and experimenting with lino-cut, etching, and carborundum forms of printmaking.

His prints have an immediate impact, combining simplicity of form and line and often vibrant colour, with his highly personal vision of birds, trees, fruit, abstract forms and, more recently, the figure.

Ethnic and primitive, as apposed to naïve, impulses characterise the work of Breon O’Casey. ‘My main influences’, he wrote in 2000 ‘have been Picasso, Matisse and Braque, and the French school generally….’

For most of his career Breon has lived in Cornwall and has been closely associated with the St Ives’ School of painters and sculptors. His apprenticeship to the sculptors Denis Mitchell and Barbara Hepworth confirmed his ability to work with his hands; he also benefited from friendships with Peter Lanyon, John Wells, Bryan Wynter and Tony O’Malley – all iconic artists working in Penwith.

The eldest son of the Irish playwright, Sean O’Casey, he grew up in London and at Dartington Hall during the war where an interest in the fine and applied arts took root. He now concentrates on his painting and has exhibited widely, and his paintings are in many public collections.

“Painting is like fishing – however good the fisherman he cannot be guaranteed to bring home the fish. To paint is to wait and watch, to try and listen to the picture, to chance a stroke, to hope for the best.”
