Sir Peter Blake
Printmaker

Born in 1932, Peter Blake attended the Gravesend School of Art and then The Royal College of Art, where his contemporaries were Bridget Riley and Frank Auerbach.

One of the leading pioneers of Pop Art, his use of imagery from comics, pin-up magazines and consumer goods captures the essence of his time. His work on album covers such as Band Aid, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club and Paul Weller’s Stanley Road helped to establish him firmly in the British consciousness.

He taught in London at St. Martin’s School of Art and Walthamstow School of Art and in 1961 obtained his first prize in the John Moore’s Exhibition, Liverpool, for Self Portrait with Badges.

From 1974 to 1976 he taught at The Royal College of Art and was made an A.R.A. in 1974 and an R.A. in1981. He now works from his studio in London maintaining a prolific output of work.

He was knighted in 2002.
